Language and Adventure at Donegal Adventure Centre

A Modern Language Programme for Students

We offer language programmes in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Irish and cater for primary schools, secondary students from 1st to 6th Year or from Year 8 to A Level for students from Northern Ireland.

Our renowned tours offer a combination of high-level education and fun-filled adventure sports. We offer language programmes in French, German, Spanish and cater for students from 1st to 6th Year and from Year 8 to A Level for students from Northern Ireland. This established, successful programme has been running since 2001, and we have worked with hundreds of schools from the second level system in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

We have 90% repeat business and continue to expand in the education sector. The programme has been consistently endorsed by the Department of Education in their subject inspection reports.

We have had hundreds of endorsements from teachers throughout Ireland and thousands of students have requested return visits to us. We believe that the students’ enthusiasm to return again and again is our greatest achievement in terms of encouraging students in their learning of languages.

Our ethos is to make the whole process of learning an enjoyable experience, whilst instilling confidence and competence in the practice of languages. We combine language workshops with adventure activities to ensure a truly unforgettable experience for students. Activities include surfing, cliff-jumping, team building, climbing tower, abseiling, low & high ropes, archery and lots more. All instructors and fully qualified within their respective disciplines and safety is our number one priority at all times. Activities are run according to governing body guidelines. Operating procedures, child protection policies & insurance details can be supplied upon request.

Accommodation is residential at Donegal Adventure Centre. We can accommodate up to 100 students at one time and provide a high standard of accommodation with ensuite or standard bedrooms (all bed linen is supplied), lecture rooms, kitchen, tuck shop and 24-hour supervision. We provide meals in a local restaurant. Students are continuously kept busy whilst they are here with us and activities run until around 10pm at night; we offer very little free time and try to get as much into the programme as possible. Teachers are more than welcome to take part in the activities, but they are not expected to do so and are welcome to have some quality free time to themselves.

We offer both mid-week and weekend tour options for schools and all work closely with language teachers to ensure that our language classes cater for each group of students. All students will receive detailed revision notes. Our teachers are chosen for their ability to teach in a positive and enthusiastic manner, thus ensuring that students feel motivated whilst learning. As a teacher myself, I believe that the fact that we tailor each course to suit the requirements of each teacher is one of the reasons why teachers bring their classes to us year in year out.

Ms. Gerri Healy, Ardee Community School, Ardee, Co. Louth
Language classes were par excellence! Nicky engaged with the students in a very special way. At the initial stage of organising the trip, the students are horrified at the thought of three hour long French classes; it’s therefore thrilling to meet them at the end of their first three hours and to witness their sheer enthusiasm, enjoyment and praise of the experience.  Language teachers cover a lot of ground – the students come away feeling they have learned a lot. The adventure activities are such a contrast to the language experience, but yet compliment it hugely. The leaders are like Nicky, enthusiastic, fun and always responsible and competent. Their psychological skills and people skills are second to none. They bond with the students, they encourage and empower them. Their love for what they do is infectious. Safety & supervision are 100%. As an accompanying teacher, I find it so reassuring to know that the students are safe and under constant supervision – day and night. The facilities are great – the rooms, the class room / red room etc. are great and everything is clean and tidy. The ancillary staff are so kind and helpful. This has been our second trip to Language & Adventure and it is already established as the 6thYear French tour! I was overwhelmed by our first visit and slightly afraid that a second wouldn’t meet up to it – on the contrary, it has reinforced my feeling that the Language & Adventure combination is an inspired concept.  Merci mille fois - à la prochaine

Ms. Gráinne Coyne, Scoil Phobail Mhic Dara, Carna, Co. Galway
The notes given in the language classes are excellent for vocabulary revision. The students thoroughly enjoy the classes and they always gain confidence in using the language. The adventure activities are enjoyable and well organised. Safety is the main priority and the students are well supervised. There is a wide range of activities. The facilities in the centre are very good. The rooms are lovely and clean, and the kitchen staff do an excellent job. Staff are always extremely helpful prior to the trip and give great assistance with arranging everything. Overall, I find the programme very beneficial and enjoyable for the students. It’s good value and they are always eager to return. I have been coming here for a number of years now and would definitely recommend the programme.

Ms. Katherine Hamill (Head of French), Dominican College, Belfast
The ‘Language & Adventure’ programme is a highly successful combination of language workshops and adventure activities and it is an excellent
way of motivating pupils. It is a well-organised, child-friendly programme which increases pupils’ confidence, not only with language learning, but
also with skills such as team-building, independence and leadership. I was very impressed with the standard of safety and supervision. It is clear
that the staff are highly skilled, fully qualified, hardworking and committed. A very worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

Joan O’Callaghan, St. Raphaela’s Secondary School, Dublin
I know that everything to do with Language & Adventure is excellent – why would we come back 7 years on the trot? – I think that speaks for itself. What the centre has more than anywhere else is a ‘family’ feeling where the students feel at home, whilst all activities are professionally run to a very high standard. This time, as we drove in on Friday, I think the students felt like they had arrived somewhere where they ‘belonged’. The facilities are great, the language course is excellent (I am a French teacher) and the students learn so much in a great atmosphere. The supervision is also excellent. We will be returning again & again & again!

Ms. Sheileen Horner, Cambridge House Grammar School, Ballymena
The Cambridge House Grammar School pupils really enjoyed their time spent at ‘Language & Adventure’.
The language classes, mixed with outdoor activities, left them motivated and enthused. Highly recommended programme. Roll on May for our return visit.

Ms. Ruth Prior, Muckross Park School, Donnybrook, Dublin
The language programme is clear, concise & well thought out. The students enjoyed every minute of the classes & were encouraged & given confidence in their knowledge of German. As always, the adventure activities were very popular with all students being encouraged to take part. They felt safe & secure during every activity. The instructors are very professional and are an integral part of the students enjoying themselves. The accommodation & facilities are clean & adequate. This is a fantastic programme which offers students a fun learning environment. It is a great opportunity for students to consolidate their knowledge & gives them huge confidence. Socially, the students learn to integrate in an out-of-school environment with other students. I can’t recommend this programme highly enough – keep up the good work!
